They were inhabited from about 200 to no later than 1100 AD and are ascribed to the Tunal Grande culture. When you climb the central hill, you get to the sacred area, from where you can overlook a large part of the zone. You should not neglect to pay attention to the flora and fauna since the site is home to several endangered or endemic species. 2 Visit of the Ghost town Mineral de Pozos Duration: 02:30 h · Level: Easy The tour through Mineral de Pozos puts us back into another time – the heyday of the exploitation of ores from the 17th to the early 20th century. Gold, silver, copper, and other metals were found in the area. Nowadays, many partly ruined buildings testify to former wealth and splendor. Attracted by the picturesque appearance of the ghost town, artists have settled here in the past decades and now endeavor to preserve this unique place. 3 Visit of the winery Cuna de Tierra Duration: 02:00 h · Level: Easy In Guanajuato, the cradle (cuna) of Mexican independence, you visit Cuna de Tierra, a winery that started on a small level about 1990 and has come to be a producer of top-quality wines in the first decade of this millennium. While you walk through the vineyards, you learn about the influences the soil and the special climate at this altitude (nearly 2,000 m [6,500 ft.]) have on the ripening process. The production equipment and the storage barrels are accommodated in the new wine cellar, a building surprising by its plain exterior with the “je ne sais quoi” and awarded several architecture prizes. Your visit also includes a degustation, of course. 4 Short city tour of Dolores Hidalgo Duration: 02:00 h · Level: Easy Short visit to the town of Dolores Hidalgo, the cradle of Mexican independence. You will visit the small Museo de la Independencia Nacional installed in a former prison by the city fathers to commemorate the important role that Father Hidalgo had played in the struggle for independence by calling, on a mild September evening, his congregation to fight against the Spaniards. 5 City Tour of León Duration: 02:30 h · Level: Easy You take a tour of León, by far the biggest town in the federal state of Guanajuato. Explore Plaza Principal – a popular place of rest in the urban bustle with its sculptured trees and the many colonial buildings including the Palacio Municipal around it. It is not far from this square to the cathedral, which combines Baroque and Neoclassical styles and features an imposing nave. Another sight worth visiting is the Neogothic church El Expiatorio; its construction has been ongoing for about 100 years, but they have not yet been sufficient to entirely finish it. From here you can already see the icon of León, the triumphal arch crowned by a large bronze lion. 6 Leather goods on Ruta Picaso Duration: 05:00 h · Level: Medium Visit trendy Ruta Picaso and get to know the traditional way of leather manufacture in Mexico step by step. On a tour in the center of León, the capital of leather articles of all descriptions, you enter the history of traditional leather manufacture. Your goals include a tannery and the Atelier Amareto, where leather shoes are individually produced by hand. A leather factory gives you an insight into the processes needed to develop and produce a new product. The perfect finale is a shopping tour through the “leather borough” of León.
