Native Trails MyTrails 2025 139 Guanajuato 7 Fashion Night Tour in León Duration: 03:00 h · Level: Easy A city tour far beyond the usual – Léon offers you just that. Join the evening “Fashion Night Tour” and learn what is in in this city today. You roam through several shops in the historic center and are shown the latest fashion in the field of textiles and – we are in a center of the leather industry – footwear. At this late hour, a very special atmosphere is conveyed by the historic buildings as well. Since visits of some of León’s restaurants and pubs are part of the program, your appetite will also be satisfied during this tour. 8 Taste Cebadinas, the national drink of León Duration: 00:30 h · Level: Easy Cebadina is a typical drink of Guanajuato and may even be called the “national drink” of the about 1.6 million people living in Léon, the biggest city of the state. Originally made using barley (in Spanish: cebada), its main ingredients today are pineapple vinegar and tamarind syrup, and it is flavored with red hibiscus (called “Jamaica” in Mexico); other flavors are also available, though. After the drink has been poured into the glass, some sodium bicarbonate is added, which gives a reaction with the vinegar and the fruit acid – intense bubbling occurs and the drink is downed immediately. It is said to be most refreshing and stimulating that way. 9 Visit of the Museo de Arte e Historia de Guanajuato Duration: 02:00 h · Level: Easy The Museo de Arte e Historia de Guanajuato presents you a comprehensive exhibition of the history and art of the federal state of Guanajuato. The subjects treated include the pre-Columbian civilizations, painting and architecture, religious developments, the trade of silver that was extracted in Guanajuato, and much more. A miniature replica of the town of Guanajuato as it was in about 1750 shows how much the town has changed since then. As corn was so important in the cultural development of Guanajuato, there is a parallel line of presentation to show this plant under different aspects. 10 Visit the cultural center of Sangre de Cristo Duration: 02:00 h · Level: Easy In the mountains of Guanajuato, at nearly 2,400 m (7,900 ft.) a.s.l., is the Parador Turístico Sangre de Cristo, a cultural center that includes a gallery and museums, but also gastronomical offers. In the Museo de Minería, for instance, interactive presentations inform you about the importance mining had for the economic boom that occurred in Guanajuato in the 17th and 18th centuries. The exhibits further give you an impression of how hard a miner’s life was at that time. 11 Visit of Guanajuatos Mummy Museum Duration: 01:00 h · Level: Easy When in 1865, workers were clearing old graves in Guanajuato, they found mummified corpses – the first of more than 100 disinterred over the years. The combination of dry, mineral-rich soil and an extremely dry air preserved the bodies of the dead. The mummies – adult men and women, infants and even babies – have been on exhibit in airtight containers since 1870. The exhibition in the Panteón (Museo de las Momias) appears odd to many and attractive to some foreign visitors. The Mexicans hold it in high esteem. In front of the museum, the well-known candy and marzipan skulls and mummies are for sale. 12 Visit of the fortress Alhóndiga de Granaditas Duration: 02:00 h · Level: Easy The Alhóndiga, a former grain warehouse and afterwards a Spanish fortress, was one of the main theaters of the War of Independence; it was here that a miner who became known by his nickname El Pípila brought about the first important independentist victory in 1810. Today the mighty building accommodates the Regional Museum of Guanajuato, where you can see – apart from pre-Hispanic pottery especially from the Chupicuaro culture – exhibits from colonial times and objects related to the history of Guanajuato. Also on display are the cages that had been hung from the four corners of the Alhóndiga as a warning – they contained the heads of the decapitated first leaders of the rebels.
