The region is ideal for short hikes, and once on the summit, you enjoy wide views over the plains more than 150 m (492 ft.) below you and, westwards, to a mountain range that rises to over 1,000 m (over 3,500 ft.). Situated in the immediate vicinity of the Cerro Prieto volcano, it started being operative in 1973 after 15 years of construction. After two extensions, its present nominal capacity is 720 MW. Although even the geothermal production of energy is not entirely free from environmental impacts, they are comparatively small. Amidst the Sonora Desert, at the foot of the Sierra de Juárez and bordered by the hostile, parched Laguna Salada, there are waterfalls, refreshing natural pools, hot mineral sources, and marvelous palms, all surrounded by rugged rock formations.
