They serve to honor Toribio Romo González who was born and lived in this settlement. He was still a young priest when he was murdered during the Guerra Cristera (1926–1929), the civil war against the anticlerical politics of the Mexican government. After numerous miracles had been ascribed to him, he was canonized in 2000. Today he is venerated in particular as the patron saint of all migrants on their way to the USA. 4 City Tour San Miguel El Alto Duration: 01:30 h · Level: Easy Accompany us on a tour of San Miguel el Alto, a town of some 35,000 inhabitants. In its center, you see the church dedicated to the archangel Michael, the patron saint of the place. It was erected in neoclassical style in the 19th century. From there it is only several steps to the central plaza, where you can find shade under the overhanging trees or under the arcades that line the plaza on all sides – a unique feature in Mexico. In the very center, at the edge of the Plaza de Armas, you find the impressive cathedral of rose-colored sandstone with the statue of the Virgen de San Juan de los Lagos in its interior. Dating back to 1543, the statue has been associated with miraculous forces from the early 17th century so that the town developed into a destination for countless pilgrims. As their numbers grew, the number of churches for the Virgin Mary did so, too – from the Capilla del Pocito through the Parroquia de San Juan Bautista to the cathedral of today.
