The vaults of the cloister are provided with a variety of different geometric patterns, which are worthy of a closer look. 8 Visit of the archaeological zone of Teopanzolco Duration: 01:00 h · Level: Easy You visit the excavation site of Teopanzolco – which is situated amidst a housing and industrial area of Cuernavaca. The name is of Nahuatl origin and means “Place of the old temple”. The first settlers were Tlahuica in the Postclassic Period. They were later subjugated by the Mexica, which explains the different styles and constructional features of the finds that have been excavated. Ceramic and architectural remains suggest that the original settlement was destroyed and later rebuilt. In Teopanzolco 14 structures have been uncovered on an area of about 2 hectares (5 acres). On his numerous trips, the art connoisseur, who was born in Iowa and educated at the “Art Institute of Chicago,” always collected new pieces, including works by Rufino Tamayo, Frida Kahlo, Miguel Covarrubias, Maurice Prendergast, Marsden Hartley and Graham Sutherland. Furniture, pre-Columbian objects, sculptures and Mexican crafts supplement the artwork collection.
