In the small village El Sauz on the shore of Lago Aguamilpa, a Huichol woman is already waiting for you to take you to her tribal community. The Huicholes live very isolated and secluded and have preserved their pre-Columbian traditions and customs to our times, something they are very proud of. 3 Excursion to the Islas Marías Duration: 08:00 h · Level: Easy The Islas Marías, a protected archipelago in the Gulf of California, blend untouched nature with fascinating history. On Isla María Madre, the remains of Puerto Balleto tell the story of its former penal colony, while dense tropical dry forests shelter rare species like the Tres Marías Amazon parrot and the Tres Marías hummingbird. Cacti and agaves dominate the landscape, while the surrounding waters are home to sea turtles, rays, and colorful reef fish. A view of the modern marina brings us back to our time. 5 Boat trip in the mangroves of La Tovara Duration: 03:00 h · Level: Easy Small boats take you through the mangrove area of Río Tovara. The canal rapidly narrows to become a tree tunnel lined by big mangrove roots. The environment offers a fascinating diversity of plant and animal species; besides countless water fowl, you will spot dozing crocodiles, snakes, and turtles in the reed and between the aerial roots of the mangroves. Lush vegetation – white lilies, ferns, and orchids to name but a few – completes the picture. During a walk through the plantation, you will learn all about the cultivation, harvest, conditioning, and processing of the coffee plant.
