Upon a route of about seven kilometers, follow the course of the Río Sabinas, which divides the mighty Sierra Gorda into two halves. Small forests, fresh spring water basins and towering, rugged rock walls accompany the hiker’s every step. What make “Panadería Casso” so special are the old adobe ovens behind the house, which are fired with the wood of the surrounding pecans tree plantations. 3 Visit of a pecan nut plantation Duration: 01:00 h · Level: Easy The pecan nut, belonging to the walnut family, has been cultivated in North America for centuries. Since the first fruits from the trees, which can grow up to almost 35 meters, can only be obtained after eight years of growth and requires a lot of water, large plantations have to be created around sophisticated water supply systems in order to achieve a full harvest. The warm climate and nutrient-rich soil of Bustamante offer optimal conditions for this. Besides their great taste, pecan nuts provide valuable minerals, vitamins and unsaturated fatty acids. 4 City tour of Bustamante Duration: 01:30 h · Level: Easy The exuberant green of many plants and trees, the cobbled streets and old houses in the typical Mexican colonial style, lend a special charm to the town of Bustamante. The small town amidst the desert landscape in Northern Nuevo León is bordered by the mighty Sierra Gomas in the West and surprises the visitor with its very old colonial buildings. During your tour of the town, you visit the Palacio Municipal, the church Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, and, towering over the town, the hermitage “La Ermita de la Santa Cruz” with a metal cross 33 m (108 ft.) tall. 6 Visit of the Grutas de Bustamante Duration: 01:30 h · Level: Difficult Allow the caves of Bustamante, in the Sierra Gomas, to amaze you with their estimated antiquity of fifty or sixty million years. Discovered in 1906 by a peasant in search of “palmitos” – palm hearts – they are therefore known as the “Grutas del Palmito”. Over its length of about 256 meters (840 ft.), you can admire the most diverse limestone formations. The whimsical stalactites and stalagmites of the active dripstone cave form a marvelous natural spectacle in the interplay of light and shadow.
