Every Sunday, “Calle Mina” turns into a street filled with joie de vivre and culture. Petty traders offer handmade clothes, jewelry and accessories at countless stands, but you will also find many antiques, many of them typically Mexican, and can observe local artists putting up their works for sale. The Corredor del Arte is a perfect place to breathe in Mexican joy of living and culture. 14 Visit of the Museo MARCO Duration: 02:00 h · Level: Easy The “Museo Marco” is an extraordinary art museum that houses approximately 5,000 contemporary art works (sculptures, installations, graphics and paintings), mostly from Latin American and Mexican artists, in 11 exhibition rooms. The architect, Ricardo Legorreta, known for his modern interpretation of domestic politics, has created a special atmosphere through a balanced combination of natural light and artificial illumination, turning each visit into a special experience and making it a work of art in itself. Regular temporary exhibitions complement the museum’s wide range of exhibits. 15 Hike Ecoparc La Huasteca - Via Ferrata along “La Ruta Vértigo” Duration: 07:00 h · Level: Difficult “La Ruta Vértigo” is a via ferrata of moderate difficulty near Monterrey and during the 7-hour tour offers you splendid, if not spectacular views of the surrounding mountains – you should, however, be free from vertigo and have no problems with great heights. On the route, which was opened in the rugged rocky landscape of La Huasteca ecopark in 2007, you will reach, e.g., Pico de Independencia, one of the highest summits in the area. Some sections of the route have been made accessible via suspension bridges and zip lines. You should not neglect to pay some attention to the plants that succeed in growing between the rocks despite the desert climate. 16 Hike through the Huasteca ecopark - Via Ferrata along “La Ruta Ignis” Duration: 02:30 h · Level: Difficult In the Huasteca ecopark, a spectacular group of rocks has been chosen to install the via ferrata called Ruta Ignis. Security systems of the newest technology make it suitable even for families with children despite the moderate to high degree of difficulty. The tour takes about three hours and allows wide views into the valley of Río Santa Catarina, a river that is usually largely dry, but whose bed testifies to the enormous floods it can cause during extreme precipitation events. The descent is by a zip line that takes you down in two stages. 17 Mountain Bike Tour through “Meseta de Chipinque” Duration: 04:00 h · Level: Medium Take a mountain bike tour to climb Cerro de Chipinque and enjoy the spectacular view to Monterrey and the surrounding summits of the Sierra Madre Oriental. On arrival in the 1,600-ha (4,000-acre) Parque Ecológico Chipinque, your local guide welcomes you and gives you a helmet and a bike. You start at the visitors’ reception center and pedal upwards through pine, beech and oak woods, passing by American agaves and many wild flowers. Just a bit of luck, and you will meet coatis, red-tailed hawks, black vultures, or even an American black bear. You finally reach the lookout at summit M (2,000 m [6,560 ft.]), for its shape also known as Cerro de las Mitras (mitre). 18 Visit of the hot springs of the Arroyo La Chueca Duration: 05:00 h · Level: Difficult Discover the Arroyo La Chueca, a small river that has dug a trail through the last foothills of the Sierra Madre Occidental, where it gives way to the Gulf of Mexico. Aligned and tamed by the Rodrigo Gómez dam, the natural river stream continues behind the walls, along bizarre rock formations. Powerful, primeval, and up to 40 m high (131 ft.), the Mexican marsh cypresses offer a shaded habitat for the fauna and flora underneath. Walk alongside for most of it and then, for the last section of the journey, wade and swim along the hot springs that flow in from all sides over small waterfalls and into the Arroyo.
