A box lunch is supplied before your return to San Ignacio. 5 Rock Paintings of the Sierra de San Francisco Duration: 08:00 h · Level: Difficult In the Sierra de San Francisco, a mountain range in the center of the Baja California peninsula, dominated by ravines, rocky outcroppings and small caves, many remarkable rock carvings are hidden. The amazingly well-preserved red-blackand-white testimonies of the ancient Cochimí culture were probably done in the period between 10,000 BC. It wasn’t discovered until the arrival of the Jesuits in the late 17th century and was declared UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993. The pre-Columbian artworks impress with their size, accuracy and coloring, and above all depict human figures, but also different species of animals. Enjoy one or more of the famous drawing sites as part of a long hike. 6 Excursion Sierra San Francisco & Cueva del Ratón Duration: 01:30 h · Level: Medium Visit the Sierra San Francisco. During the trip, the Sierra opens wonderful views of the Pacific plain and the rugged canyon scenery. As the altitude is increasing, the vegetation changes from epiphytic tillandsia to ferocacti growing on the slopes and to the endemic Idria columnaris. On a short hike, you will see the rock paintings of the Cochimí Indians. The Cueva del Ratón features paintings of deer, men, birds, and fish greater than life. 7 Extended walk along the Tres Vírgenes volcano Duration: 05:00 h · Level: Medium The volcanic chain of the Tres Vírgenes consists of three volcanoes at the southern end of the high plateau of San Ignacio. It is a protected zone for the endemic desert bighorn sheep and will impress you by its diverse desert fauna and flora. On your walk over the lava fields at the foot of the volcano, you pass countless giant cardones and thick-stemmed elephant-foot trees. At the end of your excursion, you visit the lonely power plants to generate geothermal energy. 8 Short hike at the volcano Tres Vírgenes Duration: 01:00 h · Level: Medium On the MEX 1 you cross the lava landscape at the foot of the “Three Virgins” – Volcán Las Tres Vírgenes – volcanic summits nearly 2,000 m (over 6,000 ft.) high. The landscape becomes more and more volcanic in character. At 1,920 m (6,299 ft.), the highest “virgin” is an imposing mountain. At the foot of the still active volcano, you take a walk to enjoy the extraordinary atmosphere. 9 Short tour of Santa Rosalía Duration: 02:00 h · Level: Easy Santa Rosalía owes its rise in the 19th century to a French mining company called El Boleo. Most of the impressive industrial plants are in decay or lost (some industrial monuments are now marked for preservation), but the remnants of French influence are still there: typical villas, a former administration building (now the Museo Histórico Minero), the Hotel Francés, and the church of Santa Barbara de Santa Rosalía built of iron and designed by Gustave Eiffel.
