After nearly two years of renovation, a new state-ofthe-art cabin system has been operative since 2018 to take passengers to the Cerro de la Bufa, more than 100 meters (330 ft.) above the valley station. During your ca. 650 meter (ca. 700 yd.) ride high over the rooftops, you see the town, which is said to be among the most beautiful in all of Mexico, from a unique perspective. Waiting for the glass-bottomed cabin is well worth the time if you have no fear of heights. 10 Visit the Pedro Coronel Museum Duration: 02:00 h · Level: Easy The “Museo Pedro Coronel,” which was set up in a former Jesuit college, contains works of art from many parts of the world – the collection gathered by Zacatecas-born painter and sculptor Pedro Coronel during his life-time. Marvel at unique works by Goya, Picasso, Vasarely, and many other artists. Coronel did not restrict his collection to occidental art, though, and so you will also find objects from classical Greece, Africa, Japan, and other regions in the world – what a surprise in a Mexican city amidst the desert. 11 Visit of the old mining town of Zacatecas Duration: 04:00 h · Level: Easy The old colonial city of Zacatecas in the foothills of the Sierra Madre Occidental is the richest silver town of Mexico. Your tour of the historic city center (UNESCO World Heritage Site) starts at the cathedral, leads to the “Museo Rafael Coronel” with a collection of traditional Mexican masks, then to the lookout “Cerro de la Bufa” and finally into the silver mine “Mina El Edén” from the 17th century. 12 Visit of the Museo Zacatecano Duration: 02:00 h · Level: Easy The Mueso Zacatecano offers a wide overview of the history and art of Zacatecas. Accommodated in the Casa de la Moneda, a building from the beginning of the 19th century, the museum exhibits, among other, the art of the Huicholes, the indigenous population of the states of Nayarit, Jalisco and Zacatecas; further, religious images are on display as are old coins and related objects that evoke the original purpose of the museum building. A special feature is the hall dedicated to Manuel Ponce since he was no visual artist, but a composer; he is considered to be the founder of Mexican national music. 13 Visit of the Museo Francisco Goitia Duration: 01:00 h · Level: Easy In 1978, after some reconstruction, the Museo Francisco Goitia was opened in the former governor’s residence of 1948. The museum is dedicated in particular to the contemporary visual arts of Zacatecas. Its eight halls with permanent exhibitions and two other halls for touring exhibitions offer much space to display the entire range of modern artistic creation of Zacatecas as well as its international relations. Look for yourself what the artist whose name the museum bears has left to posterity – he developed a unique style that defies an easy classification. 14 Silversmith School - City of Silvers Zacatecas Duration: 02:00 h · Level: Easy On the historic premises of former Hacienda de Bernárdez, a group of silversmiths from Zacatecas have made it their business to repopularize the old craft. At the state-run silversmith school, they show great commitment in teaching the production of high-quality silver jewelry. During your tour of the workshops, you can watch the artists and their students at work and during lessons. Learn all about the various steps – from design through to quality control. In the large atrium, there are more than 25 small shops, which are associated to the college and where professors and graduates of the school present their works.
