The hacienda was of historical importance since it was the theater of two important battles – in 1843 during the Caste War and in 1915 when Yucatec landowners, offering resistance to the emancipation of slaves decreed by Venustiano Carranza’s revolutionary government, had to accept a bloody defeat there. The small church of the hacienda is a ruin today, but with its two bell-gables and the ornamentation of the façade, it is still testifying to the former wealth of the hacienda. 7 Visit the ruins of Xcalumkín Duration: 02:00 h · Level: Easy You visit an important Mayan ruined site of the heydays of the Puuc civilization. The buildings form groups spread over about 4 km (2.5 mi.) along a valley basin. Many buildings are decorated with hieroglyphic inscriptions. Xcalumkín is also known for the production of black pottery with carved decorations. 8 Visit of the cemetery of Pomuch Duration: 01:00 h · Level: Easy The Mayas of Pomuch keep their old traditions alive and hold them in high esteem. A particularly remarkable manifestation of this is the cemetery: It features many small ossuaries where the bones and in particular the skulls of the dead are kept in decorated half-open wooden cases. On the Día de Muertos, the Mexican day of the dead in early November, the family members of the dead take the bones out of the boxes and clean them carefully, a custom that shows the presence of death in life and is deeply rooted in the local population. 9 Visit of the archaeological zone of Kankí Duration: 01:00 h · Level: Easy In Mayan language, kankí is the name of a shrub with abundant yellow flowers. It is therefore no surprise that this archaeological zone impresses the visitor not only by its buildings in Puuc style, but also by its rich flora. The place, which was inhabited from about 500 to 1000 AD, extends over several hills and comprises different groups of houses, patios, and other structures. The so-called palace, a two-story building in the central group, is of particular importance. 10 Visit Centro Ich Haa Lol Xaan Duration: 01:30 h · Level: Medium In the Centro Ecoturístico Ich Haa Lol Xaan, adventure and athletic activities combine with observation of nature and environmental awareness. The center, which shares in the ecosystems of forest, freshwater and saltwater, is the home of, e.g., spikes, iguanas, turtles, and many different bird species. You can unite the exploration of the fauna and flora with a refreshing swim in the natural pools. And if you like a bit more adventure, mount the zipline to “fly” through the wood. 11 Kayaking in the Los Petenes biosphere reserve Duration: 03:00 h · Level: Medium The Los Petenes biosphere reserve was established in May 1999 to preserve the biological diversity of species in the 282,857-hectare (698,930-acre) nature preserve. Passing large mangrove forests in a kayak, you observe the flora on biological islands that are home to more than 400 plant species, 22 of them endemic. Figs, palms, and mahogany trees are found here as are crocodiles and alligators, herons, ibises and parrots, howling monkeys, and anteaters – and last but not least, the friendly manatees.
