Native Trails MyTrails 2025 54 Campeche 38 Visit of Becán Duration: 02:00 h · Level: Medium The ruins of Becán in the state of Campeche show the oldest architectural defense system in Mexico. In the middle of the jungle you visit these interesting ruins, including the palace, in which the well-preserved mask of the sun god Kinichna has been discovered. The interior rooms are without light; the darkness and isolation probably served religious purposes. 39 Visit of Xpujil Duration: 01:30 h · Level: Medium Particularly characteristic of the ruins of Xpujil are the three very well preserved towers of the palace; usually buildings of the Río Bec civilization have only two towers. You also visit the well preserved stone masks of this place, which the American archaeologists Ruppert and Denison rediscovered in 1933 and described in great detail. 40 Visit of the ruins of Chicanná Duration: 01:00 h · Level: Easy The Mayan ruins of Chicanná are about 300 km (185 mi.) away from Campeche. Only in the region of Río Bec, complexes were constructed with identical twin towers. The towers stand on pyramidal bases on which temple-like buildings were erected, without interior spaces and not accessible, examples of pure sham architecture. 41 women's cooperative Taller de Madera Duration: 01:00 h · Level: Easy Visit a women's cooperative located in the town of “20 de Noviembre”, which was created to demonstrate the local craftsmanship to the general public and create a continuous source of income in the tourism sector. In the workshop “Taller de Madera” you can see the women, who have been trained in the use of the most common woodworking tools, as they work in the production of various works. Here you’ll find certified tropical woods, crafts such as bowls, lemon pressers and even games for sale at the adjoining small shop. 42 Visit of the Mayan site of Hormiguero Duration: 01:30 h · Level: Easy Visit of the archaeological zone of Hormiguero with structure II, which combines the most interesting characteristics of the Río Bec style – towers with steep, unusable stairs and high-quality stonework. Unlike other sites in Río Bec style, these temple buildings had true rooms. Between the towers, there is a gigantic entrance in the form of a snake head – bigger than any other one in the Mayan world. 43 Palizada city visit Duration: 03:00 h · Level: Easy Saunter through Palizada, a Pueblo Mágico that is surrounded by water and marshland. Until the start of the 20th century, the city was an important transshipment point for trade with logwood, the most important of all the dye woods. Also known as the Campeche Tree, the exceptionally hard wood was also very important as a shade of red in dye works and in ink production – it was even shipped to the USA and Europe. With the collapse of the market, Palizida faded into obscurity. The picturesque streets and historical houses with roofs made from French tiles demonstrate the former glamour of the area. To round off the visit, you will go by boat down to Rancho San Roman. 44 Visit of the archaeological site of El Tigre Duration: 03:00 h · Level: Medium El Tigre or Itzamkanac was the capital of the rich province of Acalán. The importance of the place, whose heyday was in the Late Classic period (700 – 1100 AD), is reflected in the huge structures, which date back to the turn of the era and earlier. Take your time to get an impression of the dimensions of this archaeological zone: The buildings, among them a pyramid 23 m (75 ft.) high, were raised on platforms up to 400 m (435 yds.) long.
