Native Trails MyTrails 2025 101 Ciudad de México 40 Visit of the Dolores Olmedo Patiño Museum Duration: 02:00 h · Level: Easy The Museo Dolores Olmedo Patiño, previously located in the Xochimilco district, has moved to the Chapultepec Park. It houses a significant collection of works by Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, Angelina Beloff, and Fernando Gamboa. Dolores Olmedo (1908–2002) was a Mexican businesswoman, philanthropist, and musician who demonstrated remarkable determination in a male-dominated world. She owned real estate and factories across Mexico and played a key role in promoting 20th-century Mexican art. In 1992, she donated her hacienda and art collection to the people of Mexico. At its new location, the artworks are displayed in a modern setting, while her historic estate in Xochimilco continues to host cultural events. 41 Visit of the Cultural Center Los Pinos Duration: 02:00 h · Level: Easy At the edge of Chapultepec Park, you visit the former residence of the Mexican presidents. In memory of the first meeting with his wife, president Lázaro Cárdenas had a number of pines planted and renamed the location “Los Pinos.” It was the official residence of almost all subsequent presidents until 2018. When Andrés Manuel López Obrador took office, the residence was turned into a cultural center – a place for all Mexicans. Apart from Los Pinos, you will explore the Museo del Estado Mayor Presidencial and the Calzada de los Presidentes with the statues of the presidents from 1934 to 2018. 42 Visit of the Museum Jardín del Agua Duration: 01:00 h · Level: Easy The small “Museo Jardín del Agua” with its bright pavilion and the fountain in front of it is a fascinating place in Chapultepec Park. During your tour through the gardens, the symbiosis of art and science becomes immediately visible. While the sculpture of the rain god Tláloc in the center of the fountain underlines the topic of water, the place derives its real importance from the huge aqueduct built by the engineers Eduardo Molina Arévalo and Guillermo Torres and put into operation in 1951. The importance of water for humans and nature – this is the place to feel it. 43 Fun and Play in the Papalote Museo del Niño Duration: 03:00 h · Level: Easy The Papalote Museo del Niño is not just a classical museum, but above all a science and hands-on museum addressing children in the first place – without preventing adults from gaining new insights, though. The completely renovated house includes various sections, e.g., “My Body” or “My City”, where you can approach the themes by touching, listening or just testing. Apart from the planetarium that is also part of the museum, the 3D cinema is especially impressive, enabling you, for instance, to enter the world of whales. 44 Visit to the Luis Barragán Museum Duration: 02:00 h · Level: Easy You will visit the Museo Luis Barragán. The home and studio of Barragán – an architect – who died in 1988, is recognized as an UNESCO World Heritage site and combines traditional, local elements of Mexico as well as strong modern influences and is one of the key works of world architecture. On a tour you will get to know more about Mexico’s most significant architect by looking at personal artifacts. Artwork from his home, often of a religious nature, also allows you to find out more about his personality. 45 Visit to the Leo Trotski Museum Duration: 01:30 h · Level: Easy Of course you will already know the story of how LeoTrotski was murdered by one of Stalin’s agents with an ice pick. Today, you can get to know the place where it happened. Many objects have been left in the place where they were found on the day of the attack, and this allows you to get a snapshot of that moment of history and of his strong relationship with Mexico. Photos and Trotski’s personal library shed light on further aspects of the founder of the Red Army. In the well-maintained garden area, you can then have a look at Trotski’s grave.
