Native Trails MyTrails 2026 231 Puebla 6 Hike from Jonotla to Cuetzalán Duration: 08:00 h · Level: Difficult Via the old royal trade route, your hike takes you from Jonotla to Cuetzalán. It begins with a steep path zigzagging down to Río Tozán, a large mountain brook that becomes a mighty river in times of rain. Everywhere along its banks, you see jonote trees (of the linden family), whose young shoots are used to weave elaborate baskets for work. You pass by the corn and bean fields of the indigenous population and make a stop at El Tozán, a small village of only several dozen inhabitants who have succeeded in preserving their Náhuatl culture until today. After you have crossed the very old, but picturesque San Miguel Bridge, you start your ascent through the dense mountain forest of the Sierra Norte towards Cuetzalán. 7 City tour Cuetzalán Duration: 02:00 h · Level: Medium Cuetzalán lies far off the common tourist routes in the densely wooded mountains of the Sierra Norte de Puebla. The typical provincial town in the cloud forest with its massive stone houses was founded by Franciscan monks in 1522 and is a real paradise for people fond of traditional handicraft – Indians and Mestizos alike offer their weavings, woodwork, freshly cut blossoms and fruit. Among the particularly popular articles is the high-proof Yolixpa, a herbal liqueur that is produced on the rancherías in the surroundings. 8 Visit of the Gruta Karmidas Duration: 02:00 h · Level: Difficult Visiting Gruta Karmidas, a cave discovered in 1919 in Zapotitlán de Méndez, is a real adventure. Provided with miner’s lamps, you wade through a subterranean brook flowing along the passage that leads to the five large chambers of the cave. Finally the rock gives way, and you stand in the first of them. The stalactites and stalagmites are very impressive, and some of them have telltale names such as “Bride’s Veil” or “Cauliflower”. After the glittering formation called “Star Rain”, you get to the “Enchanted Lake”, which makes you believe to behold a subterranean town. 9 City tour Xochitlán de Romero Rubio Duration: 01:30 h · Level: Easy Beauty of landscape and picturesque townscape – those are the characteristic features of the small community of Xochitlán de Vicente Suárez. On paved streets, you stroll to the Palacio Municipal with its colorful, yet unobtrusive painting. A path uphill leads you to the “Cerrito”, which is not only crowned by the chapel of the Virgin of Guadalupe, but also provides a wide panorama over the roofs of the town into the valley and to the mountains of Puebla. On the edge of the valley you discern the Balcón del Diablo, which in turn will give you a view into the gorge of Río Tecolutla. 10 City Tour Zacatlán Duration: 02:30 h · Level: Easy During your tour of the pueblo mágico of Zacatlán, you will see the former Franciscan monastery with its stern façade, the exterior of the Baroque church of San Pedro, which was modeled on an altarpiece; the Palacio Municipal in neoclassical style; and the famous flower clock with its enormous dials. From the clock it is only few steps to the museum of “Relojes Olvera III Generación”, the about 100-year-old company that has produced this clock as well as many other big clocks in Mexico and other countries of Latin America. To round off your tour, you visit the company’s main factory close to Zacatlán. 11 City tour Chignahuapan Duration: 01:30 h · Level: Easy Follow us through the pueblo mágico of Chignahuapan in the mountains of Puebla. While the modern basilica of María de la Inmaculada Concepción impresses visitors with a statue of the Virgin Mary 12 m (c. 40 ft.) high, the Baroque church of Santiago Apóstol features a strikingly colorful façade with unusual motifs. Diversity of colors is also characteristic of the “kiosk”, a pavilion some steps from the church; erected over a source, it seems to refer to both the importance of the place as a hot springs resort and the manufacture of colorful Christmas decoration for which Chignahuapan is famous throughout Mexico. The town is further “on all tongues” because of its sweets that you should not neglect to try.
