They can be up to 15 m (ca. 50 ft.) long and weigh up to 10 tons. They are peaceable and curious. Each year from June to September, you can observe the sharks off the Isla Holbox with certified boaters and – given the appropriate permission – even snorkel with them. Whale sharks are also called “gentle giants” because they feed exclusively on plankton. 2 Visit of the Isla Holbox and boat trip to Pájaros Island Duration: 04:00 h · Level: Medium Visit the center of Isla Holbox – built on sand, the village will impress you by its tranquil way of living. By boat, you continue to the small Isla de los Pájaros, home to more than 155 bird species, including ducks, flamingoes, and pelicans. Cacti and mangroves as well as driftwood and shells form a fascinating ecosystem. A rest on a lonely sandy beach gives you the opportunity to swim and take a sunbath. 3 Trip to Isla Contoy Duration: 08:00 h · Level: Medium Visit the lonely island of Contoy, about 20 nautical miles off Cancún. The national park of the same name is home to countless species of birds – magnificent frigatebirds, brown pelicans, and cormorants are constant guests, as are hawksbill sea turtles and the leatherback sea turtles, which, in the summer and fall, lay their eggs on the long beaches. The lagoons and mangrove forests are as inviting as the “Islaché” coral reef – a magnificent place for snorkeling, weather permitting. The lunch, which includes fish “Tikin-Chic” style (grilled over coconut shells and charcoal), is a real delight. 19 Restaurant Nixtamal 20 Restaurant Forasteros 21 Restaurant Ámbar del Mar
