Once a sumptuous building in Renaissance-Baroque style with a façade of cut stones, the complex consisted of a nave with two aisles and presented with high artistic quality and elaborate details. After a massive decline of the population, the mission was abandoned in 1827 and transformed into a school later. The part of the building that had probably been the sacristy still exists. It serves to keep some extant paintings, stone figures, and the centuries-old bells of the mission. 25 Visit of Loreto with mission and museum Duration: 01:30 h · Level:Easy Loreto was the religious and secular center and capital of entire Spanish California, which extended up to the present U.S. state of Oregon. A hurricane destroyed the “Mother of all Californian Missions” in 1829.
