Native Trails MyTrails 2026 36 Baja California Sur 44 Boat Tour Buenavista with fishing boats Duration: 03:00 h · Level: Medium In the early morning, your panga and the mobile landing on the long sandy beach of Buenavista are put into the water. Led by your captain, you explore the best fishing grounds of Cabo Este in the Mar de Cortés, with the grounds you head for varying by season. There is a plethora of fish – blue, black or striped marlins, swordfish, wahoo and gilt-head bream, tuna, roosterfish, yellowtail amberjack, jack mackerels or a tasty snapper– you only need to decide whether to fish yourself or have it done for you. Afterwards we will stop in one of the small bays, where you can snorkel amidst schools of young fish and colorful corals. In the late afternoon, the cook of the Buenavista Resort will take your freshly caught fish and prepare it for you to eat in the restaurant. 45 Bird Watching Rancho El Refugio Duration: 02:30 h · Level: Medium At the remote Rancho El Refugio on the Pacific coast of Baja California Sur, you experience birdwatching in a diverse natural landscape at the edge of the Sierra de la Laguna, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Accompanied by local guides — often including Rodolfo, the bird expert from the ranching family — you explore habitats ranging from lagoons and mangroves to dry desert vegetation with cacti. Particularly characteristic is the rare Búho Enano, a small owl species of the semi-desert that is actively protected here. You may also observe endemic species such as the Xantus’s hummingbird, along with coastal birds like herons, pelicans, and ospreys. 46 Nature hike Rancho El Refugio Duration: 04:00 h · Level: Difficult From Rancho Ecológico El Refugio, you hike into the surrounding Sierra de la Laguna, a biosphere reserve protected since 1994. The trail follows historic ranchero paths that were originally created for cattle driving. Rodolfo, son of the ranching family and a committed conservationist, accompanies you attentively through tropical dry forest with elephant trees, torote trees, and towering cardón cacti, explaining the natural environment and the role of this isolated mountain range as an important water catchment area. Along the way, you may often spot the Xantus’s hummingbird, the California scrub jay, or with some luck the small pygmy owl known locally as Búho Enano. The hike ends at the Arroyo San Dionisio near the ranch, where natural pools offer a refreshing opportunity to swim. 47 Hike in the Cañon de la Zorra Duration: 03:00 h · Level:Difficult The Rancho Ecológico Sol de Mayo is our starting point for today’s hike to the Sierra de la Laguna biosphere. Along – and time and again crossing – the small river, a so-called arroyo, the path leads us through the spiny desert forest into the heart of the Cañon de la Zorra. We finally face a waterfall that plunges several meters down into a deep pool in a huge granite basin, which is surrounded by cacti, endemic blue palms and spectacular nature. Countless bird species and mammals benefit from the life-giving oasis amidst the otherwise hostile environment. Weather permitting, nothing will prevent you from taking a refreshing swim. 48 Kayak tour Baja Sierra Adventures Duration: 02:30 h · Level:Medium In the oasis of Santiago, on the edge of the Sierra de la Laguna, you take a guided kayak tour on a natural water basin. The access itself is a small adventure: by kayak you move through dense reed channels of carrizo and cattails before the open water surface of the oasis unfolds in front of you. The water is surrounded by date palms, mango groves, and agricultural fields. Along the shorelines you can often observe snowy and green herons as well as the Mexican whistling duck. Your guide explains the importance of the oasis as a historical water source and agricultural center in this dry region. 49 Walk through the artists´ town of Todos Santos Duration: 02:00 h · Level: Easy Todos Santos, the town on the Tropic of Cancer, enchants you by its colonial ambience. The small town today offers the interested visitor numerous shops, restaurants and above all galleries, where traditional handicraft and modern paintings are for sale. Its pleasant climate, nearby beaches, and history-laden center lure many artists to stay in the town permanently.
