One of the most important bastions against attacks of pirates from the Gulf of Mexico in former times, the two-story building is today used to display exhibits of four architectural styles of the Mayan civilization: Peten Norte, Río Bec, Chenes, and Puuc. The exhibits include grave goods from Calakmul, the mask of the god K’will, steles, columns, and anthropomorphic figures from the archaeological zones of Edzná, Xcalumkín, Palmar and northerly Kankí. 14 Visit of the Centro Cultural Casa No. 6 Duration: 01:00 h · Level: Easy You visit the Centro Cultural Casa No. 6 in the historic center of Campeche – a one-story building dating back to the early 18th century. The plain façade and the windows with heavy gratings of wrought iron are characteristic features of the architecture of those times and typical of buildings of the upper classes. Passing a beautiful patio, you reach the rooms with their elegant furniture and decoration that allow you a glimpse into another epoch. Where in former times were the cannons to shoot pirate ships, is today the archaeological museum with a large collection of finds from Mayan times, including valuable jade masks from Calakmul. 17 Archaeological site of Santa Rosa Xtampak Duration: 03:00 h · Level: Medium Erected on a natural elevation whose summit had been flattened, Santa Rosa Xtampak covers about 9-km² (3.5-sq. mi.) and is thus the largest archaeological zone in the Chenes region. The importance of the place is testified to by both the number and size of its buildings. The three-story palace with its 44 rooms is an outstanding structure in the region, as it is provided not only with exterior, but also with two interior staircases. Another building is decorated with a serpent mouth portal, a zoomorphic entrance design that is typical of the Chenes style. 18 Visit of the Instituto Tecnológico de Chiná Duration: 02:00 h · Level: Easy You visit the Instituto Tecnológico de Chiná, an institute focusing mainly on agronomy and related courses of study.
